The Student Government Advisor in the Jay Henges Center for Youth Leadership at Leadership Institute is responsible for providing guidance and mentorship to student government associations, student leaders, and those students who wish to run for SGA.

The role will focus on fostering leadership, political engagement, and governance within SGAs

at universities across the country. This role involves advising students on best practices in

student government, mentoring them to run for their respective SGAs, managing student-led

campaign events, and supporting the development of strong student leadership initiatives.

As an employee of the Jay Henges Center for Youth Leaderships, the advisor will need to be

capable of teaching and conducting a Youth Leadership School and Youth Leadership Workshops in addition to the SGA Program.

Since most SGA elections take place in the spring, in the fall months, the advisor will serve as an expert faculty member to programs within the center and recruit for all programs, especially the Youth Leadership School, held during those months.

Responsibilities:

  • Advise and mentor student government associations and student leaders, ensuring effective governance and leadership development.

  • Mentor students through the process of running for their Student Government

  • Associations (SGAs), offering strategic guidance and support throughout their campaigns.

  • Lead recruitment efforts for student government-related programs and events.

  • Assist student leaders in organizing, planning, and executing student government events that align with leadership and conservative principles.

  • Build long-term relationships with partner organizations to support student government initiatives.

  • Provide support in event planning and coordination for student government activities, ensuring successful execution.

  • Oversee budget management for student government events, ensuring adherence to financial guidelines.

  • Be available for flexible hours, including weekends, to meet student leadership goals and ensure successful events.

Required Skills:

  • Must have been elected to SGA in college and served for at least 1 term.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Proven ability to meet tight deadlines and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with an ability to engage and advise students effectively.

  • Ability to work independently and offer guidance to student leaders in managing their

  • responsibilities.

  • Strong public speaking and presentation skills, with the ability to facilitate discussions and workshops.

  • Experience working on political campaigns and understanding of political processes.

  • Ability to manage crises and conflicts effectively while maintaining composure.

  • Strong interpersonal skills for building relationships with students, faculty, and partner

  • organizations.

  • Event planning experience with the ability to manage logistics for student government related activities.

  • Budget management experience for student-led events and initiatives.

  • Good sense of direction and ability to navigate unfamiliar campuses and environments.

  • Strong recruitment skills.

Qualifications:

  • Solid understanding of conservative principles and leadership in student governance.

  • Bachelor’s degree.

  • Elected to SGA for at least 1 term during college years

  • Previous experience in student government and political campaigns is a must.

  • Active involvement in more than one conservative campus group or organization.

  • Experience with mentoring or advising students in leadership roles is highly preferred.

  • Experience managing multiple programs or persons at once.

  • Campaign experience preferred.
