General Resume Tips

There's no one style of resume that does everything for everybody, but there are some general guidelines you should follow if you really want your resume to get noticed.

Resume Content

Employers prefer resumes with the following 4 sections in this order:
  1. Summary of special skills (including computer, foreign language and security clearance)

  2. Work experience (paid, intern, and volunteer)

  3. Education (degrees and special training)

  4. Honors & Activities (awards, offices, sports, travel, etc.)

Limit resume to one page.

  • Most resumes only get a few seconds.
  • Your resume should be easy to read quickly.

Do not list "job objective" or "references available upon request."

  • Job objectives limit your employment opportunities.
  • Employers assume you will furnish references when asked.
Emphasize applicable experience.
  • i.e., political campaigns, campus activism, work experience.

Use white or cream-colored cardstock or linen paper.

  • The information contained on the resume should catch the employer's eye, not the color of your paper.

Use readable fonts.

  • Times New Roman is a safe bet.

Use black font.

  • More than one color does not look professional on a resume.

Use active verbs.

  • Passive - privatization of social security is a proposal I created.
  • Active - created a proposal on privatization of social security.
