Tips for Scannable Resumes

To help cope with the flood of job applications, government agencies as well as many companies and public policy organizations are now using computer software that scans incoming resumes. The scanning program looks for certain key words and classifies resumes before they are sent to the HR Managers.

This means that, depending on the action words you use in a resume, it may or may not be assigned the right level of desirability, or, even come close to the attention of the right person.

So, how do you impress a computer? First, pay attention to the LI sample public policy resume included below. Check here for some helpful information, and check here for a list of action keywords. Also, pay attention to style:

1) Use plain white paper

2) Use basic fonts like Helvetica, Arial, Courier or Times New Roman

3) Include your Professional Profile at the top that will get immediate attention for your special knowledge, skills and experience

4) Use action words and keep your language short and simple

5) With the scanner you don’t have to worry about the "one page rule"

6) Have a second resume to take with you for an interview, with more detail

Example of a good resume.
